David Cross is a unique and extremely funny stand up comedian. He is also a comedic actor best known for his role as Tobias Fünke in the brilliant series Arrested Development which was sadly so good and edgy that it was cancelled.

David Cross began his professional television career as a writer on The Ben Stiller Show. It was during this period that he first met Bob Odenkirk, with whom he would later co-create the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show in 1995. He has appeared several times on the MTV2 series Wonder Showzen. Cross teamed up with Odenkirk to produce a feature film, based on one of their Mr. Show characters, called Run Ronnie Run. In 1999, he was given his own one-hour comedy special on HBO, entitled The Pride Is Back. He has released two recordings, Shut Up You Fucking Baby! and It’s Not Funny. In 2004, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 2003, he released his first tour film, Let America Laugh, and was named #85 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all time.

Sean Lock is one of the most original comics around today. You’ll probably see him sharing his witty and punchy remarks with his friends Bill Bailey, and Jimmy Carr on Stephen Fry’s QI, and on other TV shows as well, but you should check out his brilliant (dark) comedy series “15 Storeys High” (2002) one of the most underrated shows in recent years. His hyperactive imagination combined with surreal and insightful observations will make you not only laugh out loud, but afterwards go, “d..mn I wish I would have thought of that!”…

I recently realized that many people know of course Woody Allen, as a cinematic legend, a unique filmmaker, a truly master of movie making, a brilliant director and writer, a jazz musician, a philosopher (…well, he truly is), but they tend to forget that he is also a legendary comedian. I mean I can’t think of any comedian who has been quoted or copied more than him. Until 1964 he worked as a stand up comedian. I could also present some of his brilliant quotes but those are easily found. Instead I present a monologue from his stand up comedy shows that really defines his brilliance.
The Moose. ” I shot a moose, once. I was hunting up-state New York, and I shot a moose, and I strap him on to the fender of my car, and I’m driving home along the west side highway, but what I didn’t realize was, that the bullet did not penetrate the moose. It just creased the scalp, knocking him unconscious. And I’m driving through the Holland tunnel – the moose woke up. So I’m driving with a live moose on my fender. The moose is signaling for a turn, y’know. There’s a law in New York state against driving with a conscious moose on your fender, tuesday, thursday and saturday. And I’m very panicky, and then it hits me: some friends of mine is having a costume party. I’ll go, I’ll take the moose, I’ll ditch him at the party. It wouldn’t be my responsibillity.

So I drive up to the party and I knock on the door. The moose is next to me. My host comes to the door. I say “Hello. You know the Solomons”. We enter. The moose mingles. Did very well. Scored. Two guys were trying to sell him insurance for an hour and a half. Twelve o’clock comes – they give out prices for the best costume of the night. First price goes to the Burcowiches, a maried couple dressed as a moose. The moose comes in second. The moose is furious. He and the Burcowiches lock antlers in the living room. They knock each other unconscious. Now, I figured, is my chance. I grab the moose, strap him onto my fender, and shoot back to the roads, but – I got the Burcowiches. So I’m driving along with two jewish people on my fender, and there’s a law in New York State … tuesdays, thursdays and especially saturday.

The following morning the Burcowiches wake up in the woods, in a moose suit. Mr. Burcowich is shot, stuffed and mounted – at the New York Athletic Club, and the joke is on them, because it’s restricted.“

Incidentally that was one of Armando Iannucci’s choices on BBC 4’s Desert Island Discs. Certainly one of my most definate choices.

In a site where we present unique comedians, Steven Wright couldn’t be left out. He is on top of the list. He is truly genius and one of the most brilliant comedians ever. He is most famous for his incredible amount of witty, ironic and surreal jokes and his deadpan, slow style of stand up comedy. Some of his quotes from the shows are

He is also an actor and a writer. In 1989, he won an Academy Award for his short film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, where he starred with Rowan Atkinson. In 1992, Steven Wright had a recurring role on the television sitcom Mad About You and we saw him next to Roberto Benigni in Coffee and Cigarettes.

Dom Joly is not an ordinary comedian! He is genius. He is also a journalist. He has a first-class degree in Arabic and International Politics, and before he became a comedian he was a diplomat and political researcher! But he is a unique comedian! His humor is so anarchic and so surreal, that you’ll either watch his stuff with your jaw dropped or (like me) in tears of laughter. His series Trigger Happy TV (2000 – 2002) is a ground-breaking and hilarious hidden camera show where he “makes” unsuspected people witnesses of the most impossible and freaky situations known to man. There are no words to describe his genius. Or maybe there are… Dressed like a big snail, he waits for the traffic light to turn green, the passing cars stop, and he crosses the street. But he does it by crawling like a snail, slowly… excrutiantingly slowly… while the people are staring with disbelief… and then he gets up and goes on his way!… This is the Dom Joly style of comedy… I’m a fan!
